Homework

It is my belief that homework encourages student initiative, develops independent learning skills, fosters self-responsibility and allows for time for practice and application of what has been learned in Kindergarten.

Writing/Letter Practice and Handwriting Homework Book

Each Friday, the children will be assigned a handwriting page and a writing practice page in the Kindergarten Homework book. The Kindergarten child should first find the assigned letter page, review the letter strokes and complete the handwriting page on the top portion of the book. The Kindergarten child should then move on to the bottom section of the book to illustrate/find pictures of 3 items that begin with the letter of the week. He/she should then sound out, independently, the three words that label his/her illustration (or sentences if I have asked  your child to do so).  This week’s homework pages are the Uu pages. All homework books are sent home each Friday and due back by Wednesday at the latest.  The goal of homework is that your child does it independently. It is great to encourage your child and be in the same room when your child is doing his/her homework. Please however avoid the temptation to do it for them. The intention of this assignment is to show me your child’s independent work after working  on the letter’s sound(s) and formation. It is best if the writing is completed in pencil and the illustrations are done using colored pencils or crayons. Thank you.

Sharing–Not this week….

Your Kindergarten child should find one object that begins with the letter  ___   Put the item in a brown paper bag and have your child write three clues on a separate piece of paper as to the contents of the bag. Staple the clues paper to the brown paper bag. The child should practice “reading”these clues with a parent so that he/she is ready to present them to the class. (Picture cues are sometimes helpful.) Please be sure your child writes his/her name on the paper bag so that when I pull a bag out of the sharing bucket, I know who to call up to read it!) This is due every MondayThe following link is an example of this weekly activity. Try playing it with your child to show him/her an example of sharing….
